To wrap up our "What We Do" series, we are thrilled to spotlight our flagship innovation challenge: HKUMedXelerate.

Launched in 2025, HKUMedXelerate was designed to accelerate ground-breaking biomedical research from the lab bench to the real world, providing our researchers with the resources, mentorship, and platform needed to scale their impact.

Following our intense Final Pitching in December 2025, our Top 10 Finalists and Winning Teams are already making remarkable strides just half a year later, securing major accolades on both local and global stages. Here are a few outstanding highlights from their commercialisation journeys:

🏆 Global Recognition at Geneva 

In March 2026, the pioneering research led by Prof. Aviva Chow (HKU Pharmacology and Pharmacy) and Zitong Shao (Advanced Biomedical Instrumentation Centre) received high honours at the 51st International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva. The team took home the prestigious Special Grand Prize – Prize of the Chinese Delegation, alongside a Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury.

💰 Securing Major HKSAR Government Funding 

In April 2026, two of our finalist and winning teams successfully secured substantial backing under the highly competitive RAISe+ Scheme by the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) of the HKSAR Government:

🌟 Earning Top Industry Recognition 

The spin-off team (C2iTech Limited) led by Prof. Michael Chan (School of Public Health, The University of Hong Kong) achieved remarkable success at the HKMA/HKT Global Innovation Award 2025/26. The team was honoured with the HKT Best Rising Star of the Year (the top prize in the Rising Stars track) and the Prudential Hong Kong Best in HealthTech Innovation Award.

HKUMedXelerate is more than just a competition; it is a launchpad for the next generation of healthcare solutions. We are immensely proud to support these visionary scientists as they transform HKUMed’s world-class research into tangible healthcare impact.
