Event Summary: HKU Startup IP Day X Cooley – Highlights & Key Takeaways
Yesterday, on 19 May 2026, HKUMed Technology Transfer Unit | TTU hosted the HKU Startup IP Day X Cooley, a hybrid workshop dedicated to one core theme: Building a Deal-Ready Patent Portfolio: What Licensors, Investors, and Pharma Partners Actually Want.
The event drew a strong turnout of #HKUMed researchers, innovators, clinicians, and aspiring founders, both in SR4 (Laboratory Block) and online.
Highlights:
- HKU TTO IP Team sharing
The HKU IP Team opened the session with an overview of technology transfer support and IP processes at HKU, setting the context for how researchers can better position their innovations for commercialisation.
- Cooley expert session
Cooley’s Freddy Yip and Dr Xiaomin (Jasmine) Su delivered an in-depth, practice-oriented session on what makes a patent portfolio attractive in real deals—illustrated with real-world life sciences and biotech examples.
- Onsite legal consultations
Participants then joined breakout consultations with Cooley, receiving tailored feedback on their projects, IP strategies, and next steps—turning high-level concepts into concrete, actionable advice.
We are grateful to Cooley LLP for their expert contributions, and to HKU TEC | iDendron, HKU Technology Transfer Office (HKUTTO) IP Team, and all co-organisers and participants for making this a dynamic and impactful session.
We look forward to more initiatives that help HKUMed innovators build strong IP foundations and accelerate the journey from discovery to real-world impact.
