【TTU LinkedIn Series】🎥 Startup Fun Fact 1 - Most Startups Begin with a Simple Frustration 🎥
They start with something much simpler: a simple frustration. That’s the spark behind many game-changing innovations in health-tech.
🌐Global Example: 23andMe
In the early 2000s, genetic testing existed — but it was locked away in labs and hospitals. Patients had almost no access to their own DNA data.
Anne Wojcicki, after years in biotech and healthcare investing, kept asking the same question:
“Why don’t people have control over their own genetic information?”
Her frustration led to a simple but powerful idea: "What if anyone could understand their DNA with just a saliva sample and an online report?"
That idea became 23andMe — one of the most recognised direct-to-consumer genetic testing companies in the world.
📍Local Example: Prenetics (Hong Kong)
Closer to home, Danny Yeung co-founded Prenetics in 2014 with a similar dissatisfaction.
He saw a healthcare system that:
• Detects disease too late
• Focuses on treatment rather than prevention
• Doesn’t empower individuals with actionable health insights early enough
His question was equally straightforward: “What if DNA testing could help people prevent disease or detect it earlier?”
Today, Prenetics is a leading genomics and diagnostics company focused on prevention, early detection, and personalised care — right here in Hong Kong.
💡Key Takeaway:
Big impact often starts with a very human question: “Why is this still so difficult?”
What’s your current frustration — in research, clinical practice, or patient care?
Let’s turn it into innovation with real impact.
At HKUMed Technology Transfer Unit | TTU, we see these frustrations every day from researchers and clinicians closest to the problems. We’re here to help turn them into startups, products, and solutions that matter.
👉 Which example resonates with you more — 23andMe or Prenetics?
Or share your own “frustration” in the comments — we’d love to hear it!
