【HKUMed Geneva Triumphs】Gold Medal: Rapid Point-of-Care Detection of Mosquito-Borne Viruses
From HKUMed Labs to Geneva Gold: mosquito‑borne viruses evolve quickly, while conventional laboratory testing can be slow and logistically demanding – especially in remote, low‑resource or outbreak settings.
An HKUMed team has been recognised with Gold Medal with Jury Congratulations at the 51st International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva for a powerful new solution.
Prof. Tommy Tsan-Yuk LAM (School of Public Health, LKS Faculty of Medicine, HKU, and Lead Scientist, Centre for Immunology & Infection), together with Dr. Ji WANG and Dr. Yunshi LIAO, has developed an isothermal nucleic acid‑based method and reagent kits that detect and identify mosquito‑borne viruses in about 15 minutes – with serotype‑level resolution and robustness against emerging variants.
Validated on real‑world samples, this portable platform is ideal for hospitals, clinics, customs checkpoints and community screening.
Congratulations to Prof. Lam and the team. The HKUMed Technology Transfer Unit | TTU is ready to work with partners to scale this life‑saving diagnostic across Asia and beyond.
