An HKUMed innovation has just received Gold Medal with Jury Congratulations at the 51st International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva.
 
Prof. Raven Kin-Hang KOK, Assistant Dean and Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology, School of Clinical Medicine, LKS Faculty of Medicine, HKU, has developed a revolutionary home-based immunisation method. A special 3‑in‑1 powder, used during weekly toothbrushing, induces powerful mucosal immunity at the entry point of respiratory viruses after just five applications.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the invention, Prof. Kok said:
“Vaccine hesitancy is one of the reasons for low vaccine coverage rates worldwide. However, older adults need protection against the most prevalent respiratory viral infections, including influenza, COVID-19, and RSV. However, the usual intramuscular administration of each individual vaccine each year may further contribute to hesitancy among the elderly. Therefore, we develop a special powder vaccine 3-in-1 formulation that offers an possibility of self-immunization at home through tooth brushing.”
