【HKUMed Geneva Triumphs】Special Grand Prize & Gold Medal: Nose-to-Brain NanoPowder Nasal Spray for Rapid Stroke Rescue 🏆

From #HKUMed Labs to Geneva Gold: every second matters in stroke care, yet life‑saving treatment often comes too late, causing permanent disability and immense healthcare burdens worldwide.
 
We are proud to share that an #HKUMedXelerate2025 winning project has received the highest honours – Special Grand Prize – Prize of the Chinese Delegation plus Gold Medal with Jury Congratulations – at the 51st International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva.
 
Leveraging advanced nanotechnology and inhalation science, Prof. Aviva Chow (Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy, LKS Faculty of Medicine, HKU), together with Dr. Zitong Shao, Ms. Jocelyn Deng, and Ms. Yinjie Zhou at Advanced Biomedical Instrumentation Centre, has developed a pioneering portable nose-to-brain nanopowder spray. A single spray delivers neurotherapeutics directly to the brain, enabling rapid neuroprotection even before the patient reaches hospital.
 
Speaking about the inspiration behind the invention, Prof. Chow said:
"Stroke steals brain function in minutes, yet too many patients miss the narrow window for treatment. As populations age around the world, we set out to bring help closer to patients because every second matters. We hope this innovation can protect the brain, preserve quality of life, and open new possibilities for patients with other neurological diseases."
 
This first‑aid solution has the potential to transform stroke outcomes globally and substantially reduce healthcare costs.
