The HKUMed Technology Transfer Unit wrapped up an inspiring week of innovation and engagement in the Greater Bay Area as a co-organiser of the MedTech Hackathon GBA 2026.

Through a series of activities in Guangzhou and Hong Kong, the team helped advance translational biomedical innovation and deepen regional collaboration.

Guangzhou Biomedicine Ecosystem Visit and Demo Day (4 February)

As part of the Hackathon programme, HKUMed joined a full-day visit to Guangzhou’s biomedicine ecosystem and participated in the Demo Day. The visit included:

  • Guided tours of leading R&D centres and state key laboratories
  • A closed-door seminar on specialised financing for biotechnology, opportunities in the Greater Bay Area, and investor matchmaking

During the programme, Kenneth Lai, HKUMed Technology Transfer Lead, delivered a presentation highlighting HKUMed’s innovation pipeline and translational focus. Two HKUMed teams also showcased their MedTech projects to a group of early-stage biomedicine investors, demonstrating the faculty’s growing portfolio of clinically driven, market-oriented innovation.

HKUMed Info Session on Campus (5 February)

To support internal innovators in maximising the benefits of the MedTech Hackathon GBA 2026, HKUMed hosted a dedicated information session on campus for principal investigators, postdoctoral fellows and postgraduate students.

The session covered:

  • Hackathon structure and expectations
  • The Lean Launcher Training Program
  • Mentorship and coaching opportunities
  • Access to industry and investor networks
  • Strategies for leveraging GBA visits to advance translational and clinically focused projects

This engagement aimed to equip HKUMed researchers with the tools, connections and insights needed to translate their ideas into impactful MedTech solutions.
