HKU Recognised in 2025 Hong Kong Top Ten Innovation & Technology Breakthroughs

Three HKU-led projects were selected among the “2025 Hong Kong Top Ten Innovation & Technology Breakthroughs” by the Beijing-Hong Kong Academic Exchange Centre, including two landmark medical innovations from HKUMed:
- First-in-class “dual immune” therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma – led by Professor Thomas YAU, which has gained international approval and significantly extends overall survival for patients.
- Light-sensitive hybrid γδ-T-cell exosome immunotherapy for melanoma – led by Professor Wenwei Tu, offering a scalable, off-the-shelf cancer immunotherapy approach.
A third recognised achievement is the first-ever detection of the “first heartbeat” periodic oscillation of a newborn neutron star, providing direct observational evidence of magnetar-driven gamma-ray bursts.
These honours highlight HKU and HKUMed’s strength in both transformative clinical innovation and frontier science.
