HKUMed Virologists Develop Promising Nasal Spray Vaccine Against H5N1 Avian Influenza

Virologists from the Department of Microbiology, LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed), have developed a nasal spray vaccine that demonstrates rapid and robust protection against H5N1 avian influenza in small animal models.
Led by Professor Honglin CHEN, the research team is preparing to advance this innovative vaccine candidate into human clinical trials, marking an important step forward for pandemic preparedness and rapid-response vaccine technology. The candidate builds on HKUMed’s influenza virus vector-based nasal spray platform, previously deployed for COVID-19 vaccine development.
The HKUMed Technology Transfer Unit (TTU) is supporting the translation of this breakthrough towards real-world use, working closely with the research team and external partners to explore clinical development and commercialisation pathways.
